- Development Program for Supervisors

 

PURPOSE

Module 1: SELF MANAGEMENT

Module 1 of this program is aimed at empowering learners to take responsibility for their own emotions and actions - in all situations. The focus is on developing learners' ability to manage their emotions and choose appropriate behavioural responses to situations (as opposed to "reacting without thinking").

Module 2: PEOPLE MANAGEMENT

Module 2 focuses on inter-personal effectiveness.

The ability to communicate effectively and assertively is a non-negotiable for Supervisors. During this module Supervisors will learn how to positively influence verbal encounters by applying specific skills and techniques that are designed to build trust and promote co-operation.

They will also learn how to confidently and effectively deal with specific scenario's and people management challenges.

Specific processes and techniques for handling "difficult" people and situations are discussed and practiced.

Module 3: TEAM ACTIVITY MANAGEMENT

Module 3 is aimed at empowering learners with the competencies required to effectively plan, organise and control the efforts of the team in a way that supports the overall business strategy and objectives.

  • How to stop patterns of blaming and complaining and respond pro-actively to challenges (shifting from an external to an internal locus of control)

  • How to use their body language to enhance their verbal messages

  • How to communicate understanding of other's thoughts and feelings
  • How to use questions in order to get quality information
  • How to give constructive feedback
  • How to elicit feedback from others and respond appropriately to feedback
  • How to influence others
  • How to motivate a team
  • How to deal with the following people management challenges:
    • Conflict in the team
    • Discussing work related problems with an employee
    • Responding to exceptional performance
    • Addressing troublesome personal habits
    • Handling a dissatisfied employee
    • Addressing poor performance
    • Preparing employees for "stretch tasks"

Module 3: TEAM ACTIVITY MANAGEMENT

  • How to set goals and standards
    • Why goal setting is important
    • To identify and describe the activities associated with each of the stages of the management cycle
    • To distinguish between goals, objectives, activities, standards and wishes
    • How to set SMART goals
    • How to apply the principles of effective goal setting
    • To apply a series of questions to enhance the quality of set goals
    • When and how to edit goals
    • About the role of goals in the process of motivating staff, increasing commitment and developing competencies at all levels in the organisation
  • How to prioritise, plan and schedule the work that needs to be done
    • How to use a "planning sheet" to outline goals and activities
    • To set checkpoints and controls for monitoring progress
    • To specify activities that lead to the achievement of goals
    • To select and manage resources appropriate to tasks
    • To use methods improvement to eliminate, simplify and combine work
    • To analyse complex tasks and break them down into manageable chunks
    • To apply techniques to schedule projects and activities
  • How to effective delegate work to team members
